Wallsee, located on the southern bank of the Danube near the border between Upper and Lower Austria, offers a picturesque townscape. Wallsee Castle, which is privately owned by the Habsburg-Lorraine family, is impressive.
The Danube valley near Wallsee is called the Strudengau because there were several dangerous water vortices here before a wider fairway was blown out. A few kilometers above Wallsee, the Erla flows into the Danube. She comes from the hills of the Mostviertel. Much more water, however, flows in from the Enns (15 km upstream), as well as the northern tributaries Aist (about 12 km upstream) and Naarn (10 km downstream).
