    During extensive renovation work in the 18th century, a vessel with relics was discovered under the altar, which revealed that the old pilgrimage and trade route from the Berlin area led through the village meadow in the direction of Ruppin, Prignitz, Hamburg and Arhus (Denmark). Originally it was the pilgrims to the Holy Miracle Blood of Wilsnack who streamed from Central and Eastern Europe to Prignitz and left many a thaler here in Kotzeband (old name of Bötzow). It was only their donations that made the construction of the massive fieldstone church possible, which began around 1270 in the late Gothic style and was completed in 1418, according to the inscription on the oldest of its four bells. With the introduction of the Reformation in 1539, the flow of pilgrims ebbed and finally came to a complete standstill in 1553.
