"... The Ostbach has several sources in and around Hiltrop and, together with the Westbach, is the receiving water for the urban area of Herne. In the past, after its union with the Westbach under the name“ Strünkederbach ”, the brook flowed east past Strünkede Castle into the Emscher In 1903, the Westbach was separated by an interest group formed from the city of Herne, Harpener Bergbau AG and the municipality of Baukau and led into the Emscher in a new course as a deep valley trench on the shortest route west of Strünkede Castle.

In 1933/34 the Ostbach was expanded and relocated to a new bed on the upper reaches. The Ostbach broke into the north of Mont-Cenis-Straße. In the past, the brook was also called “Schmedebecke”, so named after the Schmidt farm in Sodingen.

The area “Ostbachtal / Wiescherfeld” is one of the landscape protection areas of the city of Herne. ... "
