On the east wall, the former ramparts and moats of the once fortified city were redesigned with green spaces and water areas. The project was completed in 2004. The new system follows the medieval structures of the former fortifications. In the future, the redesign will also be continued on the Südwall. Benches and a small water fountain invite you to take a break at one of the two new moats and offer a view of the “Platz der Deutschen Einheit” or the Jewish Museum Westphalia (picture). The west side of the city had no wall opening. The state border between the archbishopric of Cologne and the county, later duchy of Kleve, ran along this side of the city on the other side of the Scholzbach to Gahlen.
