Brief description of the smugglers' path

In its approximately 13 km long course, the »smugglers' path« crosses historical borders several times, which existed from the Middle Ages until after the Second World War. Smugglers carried “hot goods” across the borders. From the 16th to the 18th century, this border between the powerful Archdiocese of Trier and the Duchy of Pfalz-Zweibrücken divided the country and people into Catholics and Protestants. After the Napoleonic era, the border line between the Duchy of Saxony-Coburg and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg ran at the same point. Smuggling last flourished on the border between the "German Reich" and the "Saar area" from 1920-1935. On the way there are still some boundary stones from those times. On the way there are always wonderful views of pretty villages and rolling hills: in the north the Hunsrück with its highest elevation, the Erbeskopf, in the west the Schaumberg and in the south the Göttelborner Höhe, as the edge of the Saar coal basin. The water treading facility in Farthelborn invites you from May to October to provide warm feet with pleasant cooling. Source: Text information board
