The Pfungstädter Moor in southern Hesse has been emitting vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere for years. To stop this, the dry moor is now to be irrigated - with up to 300,000 cubic meters of Rhine water a year.

The regional council (RP) Darmstadt and the water association Hessisches Ried (WHR) have signed a contract that provides for the irrigation of the dried-up Pfungstadt bog. The RP announced this in a statement on Monday. According to this, up to 300,000 cubic meters of treated Rhine water are to be fed into the moor every year. According to the announcement, the state is providing 225,000 euros for the construction of the plant and will assume the future costs of water supply by the WHR: around 200,000 euros per year.
