In the 19th century, it was common practice in many public parks to have an animal enclosure to entertain visitors. A pool for otters was also created in the Bürgerpark just three years after it was founded. However, as the animals are very shy and only active at night, the focus was soon on native, diurnal species that can also withstand the local weather.

Although attempts were made to keep exotic animals to make the zoo more attractive, the subsequent costs made maintenance impossible. Nevertheless, the Bürgerpark managed to keep kangaroos for a long time, which felt comfortable despite the weather and produced many offspring. After the war, the dromedary "Bobby" was added, and quickly became the big attraction in the animal enclosure.

Today, the animal enclosure shows local animal and bird species in appropriate areas that are difficult to observe in the wild. Fallow deer, mountain goats, sheep, ducks and even Bentheim pigs feel very comfortable here. For children, the guinea pigs in their new enclosure are of course the big attraction.
