    St. Peter's Chapel

The PETRUS Chapel was built on the initiative of Brother Master Willy Moll and under the direction of Gerd Held from 2004 to 2005 in memory of the excavated village of Königshoven and the beautiful church "St. Peter", which stood on the highest point in the village. The PETRUS Chapel is located about 210 m east of the old chapel and 500 m south of the old parish church "St. Peter" on the new land. The basic idea behind the construction of the new PETRUS Chapel was that the former residents of Königshoven would find a piece of home here, and that all visitors could use the chapel as a place of reflection and prayer.

The leaded glass windows and the entrance door to the PETRUS Chapel come from the old Buchholz chapel. The windows were restored by the glass art company Oidtmann in Linnich. The entrance door to the PETRUS Chapel was extensively repaired by Josef Lomanns and Peter Imbery and painted and sealed by Karl-Heinz Borsch. The artistic painting work was done by master painter Hans Löhrer, Karl-Heinz Borsch and the artistic painter Walter Huchwajda.

In the apse you can see a crucifixion scene of Jesus with Mary and John in the middle. Above this crucifixion group is a column section made of stone from Cologne Cathedral. This stone is a gift from the Cologne Cathedral workshop.

The left wall of the apse shows Peter with the key, the right wall Paul with the sword. Both stand on a base under a filigree canopy, which was designed as a false architecture. A painted frieze on the upper side walls looks west towards the entrance door, where the Archangel Michael is depicted fighting the demons. Viewed from the apse, on the left side of the entrance there is a black Madonna from Tindari, Sicily, which was donated by a Sicilian from Kaster. Above this Madonna hangs a prayer bell from the Alt-Königshoven monastery. This bell was donated by Deacon Bartel Held from Glesch, who was born in Königshoven. A holy water font is built into the wall to the right and left of the entrance door. On the north side between the two windows there is Peter on the left and Paul on the right on a wooden base, carved and donated by chapel friend Willi Klöcker from Frimmersdorf.

After Brother Master Willy Moll received a tip from District Administrator Werner Stump that an altar stone was for sale in Tongeren in Belgium, action was taken immediately. At the third negotiation meeting on Sunday, September 25, 2005, Willy Moll, Gerd Held and Franz-Josef Pröpper came to an agreement with antique dealer Doomen. The very next day, the relief "The Last Supper", which is carved in a block of Carara marble measuring 1.20 x 0.70 x 0.20 m, was brought to the Wirtz carpentry workshop. This very beautiful work was made around 1800 and comes from a Jesuit monastery in Maastricht.
Mr. Wirtz Senior and Junior immediately set about the wooden altar that covers the relief and on Friday, September 30th, 2005, the complete altar was delivered to the PETRUS Chapel. After an hour of work, the valuable piece was in place.

The cathedral chapter Dr. Heiner Koch - president of the shooting fraternity -, pastor and president of the Königshoven shooting fraternity Thomas Oster, as well as the dean for the Bedburg region, pastor Christian Hermanns, consecrated the PETRUS Chapel on October 1st, 2005.
A proud celebration with many friends and guests from near and far. Speeches and honors were heard and thanked.
The construction team received a bronze medal as a thank you for their hard work, designed by the Cologne sculptor Sepp Hürten.
The PETRUS Chapel Königshoven 2005 e.V. support association was founded to ensure the care and preservation of the beautiful PETRUS Chapel.
The construction team and the members of the PETRUS Chapel Königshoven 2005 e.V. support association look forward to your visit.

It is a place of peace. It is a small oasis in the middle of an open field, surrounded by fields and wind turbines, but it still has something calming about it. This place is perfect for a picnic because of the table and benches.
