The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial consists of the premises of the former central remand prison of the State Security of the GDR, which was in operation in Weißensee and Hohenschönhausen from 1951 to 1989. Mainly political prisoners were arrested there and tortured physically and mentally. [2] The building complex was not shown on city maps. Since the 1990s there has been a memorial in the same place as a place of remembrance for the victims of communist tyranny in Germany. The buildings of the former prison were listed as a historical monument in 1992. The memorial is a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience.
