Moorriem is a medieval, rural marshland settlement on the outskirts of Elsfleth, with a farming heritage. This region with its 13 half-timbered villages invites you to visit in its tranquility. Numerous listed half-timbered courtyards and thatched roof houses, some of which are 300 years old, have been lovingly restored. Country life has remained alive, characterized by agriculture and horse breeding.

Old cottage gardens are particularly worth seeing and can be particularly admired on a bike tour. Once a year, some locals prepare their gardens in a special way so that visitors can visit them.

Moorriem is a 16 km long settlement strip between the Weser and Oldenburg. It begins east of Oldenburg in Moorhausen and extends through Butteldorf and Bardenfleth to Neuenbrok.

History

The word Moorriem is probably derived from the shape of the strips of settlements that were built in the Middle Ages in a north-south direction in front of the moorland east of the Oldenburg Geest. This area originally stretched both north and south of the later municipality of Moorriem. In the north it was bordered by the settlement area of the Frisians, the Rüstringen district, and in the south, south of the Hunte, by the Delmenhorst Geest. The area known as Moorriem in the Middle Ages largely coincided with the western part of Nieder-Stedingen. The term Nieder-Stedingen refers to the eastern part of the Ammergau, which was inhabited by Saxony at the time when German tribal areas were divided into districts. To the east of the Morriem in Nieder-Stedingen were the other three marsh bailiwicks of Oldenbrok, Strückhausen and Hammelwarden.

During the time of Danish rule over Oldenburg and the Duchy of Oldenburg, there was a bailiwick of Moorriem, which included the parishes of Elsfleth and Neuenbrok.
