    Masescha, Triesenberg “History”
    The hamlet (Museschen), first mentioned in documents in 1355, was probably the first settlement center of the Walsers in the Liechtenstein area after their immigration around 1300. Here stands the first church in Triesenberg, the Chapel of St. Theodul, probably built soon after 1300 and first mentioned in documents in 1465. In 1397, Wilhem III of Richenstein and his wife sold part of their hereditary fiefdom on Masescha to a Walser.
    Until the Triesenberg parish was founded in 1768, Masescha belonged to the Triesen parish. A chaplaincy foundation established by Ludwig von Brandis in 1494 for St. Mamertus (Triesen) (closed before 1639/40) and the Triesner early mass benefice foundation by Valentin von Kriss (1689) required their holders to say a weekly holy mass at Masescha. Various processions of the Triesenbergers took place to Masescha, including on August 16 (Theodul). From the 17th century onwards, Masescha was also the destination of bus processions from the villages of the county of Vaduz, especially on January 20 (Sebastian) and August 16 (Rochus).
    From the beginning of the 19th century, gypsum mining was carried out commercially at Masescha. A project for a cable-car suspension railway for transporting gypsum to Schaan (1902) was not realized for financial reasons.
    Masescha was one of the first Liechtenstein towns to be used for summer tourism from the second half of the 19th century. The oldest inn on Masescha is the "Kreuz" inn, whose last innkeeper was Johann Sele (1817-1886). Today's "Berggasthaus Masescha" was opened in 1877 by Johann Baptist Beck as a pub and later operated as a spa. A hall extension in 1948 was followed in 1953 by the construction of a chalet with guest rooms in place of the farm building that burned down in 1952.
    In 1874-75 the road was built from Triesenberg to Masescha, which was served by the "Alpenpostträger" from 1910 onwards. From 1931-43 Guntram Fehr (1895-1981) bred silver foxes on Masescha. In 1947 and 1948 motorcycle races took place between Vaduz and Masescha.
