The Rickelsbüller Koog lies between the Hindenburg Dam and the Danish border,
in the very north of our region. On the Danish side, it borders the Margarethe Koog, separated by the wild boar fence, which has been in place since the end of 2019 and is the subject of much debate.
The Rickelsbüller Koog covers almost 540 hectares and is the northernmost Koog in Schleswig-Holstein.
The dike was only completed in 1982, and since then, the Koog has been completely
isolated from saltwater. This has led to the development of diverse habitats,
which primarily serve migratory and breeding waders and waterfowl.
Large flocks of birds can be observed here, especially in spring and autumn.
They find a richly laid table from which they can replenish their fat reserves for the long onward flight.
From autumn to spring, thousands of winter visitors visit.
In addition to barnacle geese, these include wigeons and dunlins.

The knot, for example (a bird in the snipe family), is about
the size of a blackbird and almost doubles its weight when resting in the Rickelsbüller Koog.
The sea eagle can also be spotted here with luck.

So it's always worth carrying binoculars.

The nature reserve is nearly 13 km long and can be walked around. Unfortunately, it's not possible by bike; you can only glimpse it. There are several information boards along the way, and an information pavilion about the Wadden Sea National Park is located at the parking lot.

A birdwatching hut is located halfway along the approach, and it's impossible to miss.
