The castle in Heidenheim was once the ancestral seat of the influential Lords of Hellenstein. Like so many other castles on the Swabian Alb, this castle also came into the possession of the Counts of Helfenstein. The castle was owned by Württemberg from the beginning of the 16th century, but it burned down to the foundations in 1530. The castle was only partially rebuilt and Frederick I of Württemberg decided to add a palace to the castle.

While the castle continued to decay and restoration work only began in the late 19th century, the Renaissance castle is in exceptional condition. Both parts of the complex now house a local history museum and a carriage museum.

But even if you don't visit the museums, the view of the city and the Brenz Valley from the castle is unique.
