Basel train station since 1845
In the 19th century, traffic and industrialization changed Basel: in 1832, a steamship docked here for the first time. Eight years later, the first railway in Switzerland ran on the Saint-Louis–Basel route, and a station was opened within the city walls in 1845. Soon, trains were running daily to Paris and Frankfurt.

The Basel SBB train station (usually called Basel SBB, less often Centralbahnhof or Schweizer Bahnhof) is the largest border station in Europe and the largest and most important train station in the city.
