The Lilienthal monument in Bäkepark in Berlin-Steglitz was created in 1914 and shows Icarus as a male nude spreading his wings. The monument is a work of Peter Christian Breuer, who u.a. also created the Beethoven monument in the Rheinaue in Bonn.

The Lilienthal monument in Bäkepark shows Icarus standing on a steeply pyramidal plinth ending with flattening steps. A young, athletic man spreads his arms horizontally. Artificial wings are attached to them. The feet are just next to each other, the legs are closed. The entire body - from the feet and legs over the slightly stretched out chest, up to the head straight-facing head - is under tension. The eyes are wide open with a view of the sun. The entire statue made of bronze appears in combination with the massive, high base of sandstone particularly delicate and fragile. Karl Wilhelm Otto Lilienthal (May 23, 1848 in Anklam, Pomerania, Kingdom of Prussia – August 10, 1896 in Berlin, German Empire) was a German aviation pioneer. He is considered the first person to successfully and repeatedly perform gliding flights with a flying machine (glider), thus giving the "heavier-than-air" principle its first human application and paving the way for its later success. His experimental groundwork and initial flight attempts from 1891 onward led to the concept of the wing. He developed the polar diagram as a representation of the aerodynamic properties of wings, a method still used today. The production of the standard glider at his machine factory in Berlin was the first mass production of an aircraft. His flight principle was the conversion of kinetic and potential energy into lift and thrust (gliding flight).
