The history of pottery in Ochtrup

Ochtrup is known as a pottery place far beyond the borders of the Münsterland and a city with a long history. From ancient times the local population was oriented towards agriculture. In addition, one operated the pottery and weaving. Towards the end of the 16th century there was a hard, bloody battle between Bentheim and Gildehaus farmers and Ochtrup citizens. There was a dispute over the Brechte, a previously neglected wasteland that shows rich clay deposits. It was during this time that the development of the Ochtrup pottery began. The heyday of the pottery trade was in the 18th and first half of the 19th century. There is evidence of 23 potteries in Ochtrup around 1800.

        Pöttkerspättken and Kiepenkerle
The potters' business not only included the production, but also the distribution of their products. Ochtrup earthenware was already being sold in a wide area around Ochtrup in the 17th century. As early as 1668, the potters in Ochtrup were exporting their bowls, pots, jugs, knabbelkümpkes and nightingales to the neighboring Netherlands. In the period that followed, the Münsterland, Emsland, Holland and the (Hanoverian) border area of Lower Saxony became the main sales areas. The so-called "Kiepenkerle" or "Pottkerle" were known inland. On the well-trodden paths, the “Pöttkerspättken”, they wandered with their panniers from village to village and from farm to farm.
The last still producing pottery in Ochtrup, in which the traditional decor of the Ochtrup earthenware is still made, is run by the potter Lisa Eiling in her studio at the Ochtrup train station.
Particularly popular and world-famous is the “Ochtruper Nachtigall”, a vessel flute which, when filled with water, is amazingly like the song of a nightingale. Whistle figures and vessel flutes were made as children's toys by potters around the world.
