The baroque palace ensemble of Moritzburg Zeitz consists of the three-wing main building in the rear courtyard, as well as the Gothic palace church of St. Peter and Paul, the baroque gatehouse and the outbuildings that are grouped around the front courtyard. The complex is surrounded by fortifications and a moat. The baroque orangery, also north of the fortifications, complements the ensemble.
On March 19, 1657 the foundation stone was laid for the new palace. Duke Moritz appointed Moritz Richter (1620-1667), Prince-Saxon country architect, who was in the service of Weimar, as architect and master builder. Richter knew how to design a palace ensemble in the style of the early baroque, taking into account the old church and the floor plan of the destroyed bishop's castle. Johann Moritz Richter (1647-1705) completed the building after the death of his father. In 1663, Duke Moritz moved into the completed south wing. Around 1678 the construction of the residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Zeitz was completed.
