Very interesting rock formation, beautifully situated. You should take your time and explore the Badenstein in peace.

Big bathing stoneThe large Badenstein and his little brother, the little Badenstein, are geological features in the Burgwald, which consists mainly of Bunsandstein. About 220 million years ago, sediments from the Rhenish Slate Mountains deposited in the Germanic Basin during the Triassic period. It was up to 421 m high Buntsandsteinplatte, which broke into several pieces when the area in the Tertiary experienced a tectonic increase. These pieces then became the mountains and hills of today's Burgwald.
But the Buntsandsteinplatte is broken by a few basalt masses such as the large and the small Baden stone. The elevations of the aboveground basalt quarries are still clearly visible, the large Badenstein resembles a crater. Its blue basalt stones were used in the 18th century in Rosenthal and weather to repair the road surface. In 1830 the quarries were closed.
The term "Baden" comes from an Old Hessian word and means "to benefit" or "to help"

Up until 1830, basalt stones were cleared here, which were used for road construction in the towns of Rosenthal and Wetter.
