The large - and magnificent, but with its baroque splendor not quite fitting to the Franciscan ideal - cathedral "Santa Maria degli Angeli" is not in the historical core of the old town of Assisi, which nestles along the mountain slope of Monte Subasio, but down in the Level. This church was built - like a sweeping cloak - around the "Portiuncula", a small chapel that still exists in the middle of the nave and is one of the original and important Franciscan shrines.

The three-aisled basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Our Lady of the Angels) is located in the valley of Assisi and is visible from afar; its characteristic feature is the single bell tower, which is surmounted by the dome.

The basilica contains two of the most important monuments of the life of Saint Francis and the history of the Franciscan order: the small Portiuncula church and the so-called Transitus Chapel.

On March 25, 1569, the then Bishop of Assisi laid the foundation stone for the basilica, which was built over the two chapels. The church was built at the request of Pope Pius V (1566 to 1572) according to the ideas of the architect Galeazzo Alessi. It was intended to accommodate the numerous pilgrims that the Portiuncula Chapel attracts. The latter is considered the place of origin of the Franciscan movement.

It is a basilica located below Assisi in central Italy. Twice, in 1986 and 2002, the World Prayer Meeting of many leaders of the great religions took place in this church. Built at the behest of Pope Pius V between 1569 and 1679, the church was designed by architect Galeazzo Alessi of Perugia in 1568 around the small chapel of Portiuncula, where St. Francis founded the Franciscan movement in 1208 and in which he founded died. The chapel was much too small for the visit of the thousands of members of the Order (5000 met there alone in 1221 in the annual chapter of the Order) and for the countless pilgrims. In 1909, Pope Pius X elevated the church to a patriarchal basilica with a papal chapel (Capella Papalis) and confirmed its title: head and mother of all the churches of the whole Order of Friars Minor.
