The views from the fortress are absolutely breathtaking. You can run around it and enjoy stunning scenery along the Main river and the Old Town of Wuerzburg! Early birds will make the most of this experience...

There is an interesting footpath up to the fortress. Start is at the Alte Mainbrücke, over the traffic lights, to the "Spitäle". Here left in the direction of St. Burkard, the oldest church in Würzburg! A path leads between the church and the rectory, high through the fortifications and through the vineyards. Past the "Maschikuliturm" built by Balthasar Neumann, through the vineyard "Innere Leiste". the end of the paved road leads into a gate, the extremely high fortress walls. We get to the inner area of the fortress, which today serves as a spacious parking lot for visitors to the Marienberg fortress! Following the path, uphill, we pass two heavily fortified gates with murder holes (e.g. hot oil from above :-). The third, the "Scherenbergtor", is the only access to the inner courtyard of the castle, with the keep, the fountain house and the Marienkirche. There is still a lot more interesting to report here! :-)
