    The airlift monument is located on the former air base site at Frankfurt Airport, right next to the A5 motorway, about 1 km south of the Frankfurt motorway junction. It is ideally accessible via a bike and footpath. The Zeppelinheim S-Bahn station is also only approx. 1500 meters away.
    The memorial commemorates the airlift and Berlin blockade in Berlin.
    The popularly known “raisin bombers” Douglas C 47 and C 54 played an important role in this. Here in the museum they are now exhibited in their original form.

      The Frankfurt Airlift Memorial was opened on June 26, 1985. This was the thirty-seventh anniversary of the start of the airlift to Berlin. In 2008, Fraport AG redesigned the area and restored the two aircraft. They were nicknamed the "raisin bombers" by the locals because the pilots dropped chewing gum, chocolate and perhaps raisins for the children of Berlin. The aircraft on display are a Douglas C-47 and a Douglas C-54. The original airlift memorial was erected in Berlin in 1951. The people of Berlin called it the "hunger claw". The three struts symbolize the three air corridors through which Berlin, which was in the Russian sector, was supplied with vital goods from the then western zone.

        Airlift: From June 26, 1948 to May 12, 1949, the besieged population of Berlin was supplied with vital goods by air. Douglas C-54 "Skymaster" aircraft were brought here to Frankfurt am Main from all over the world. This meant that the Allies were able to fly to Berlin around the clock soon after the airlift began. However, because aircraft were arriving every minute, the pilots only had one approach to land. If this attempt failed, they had to turn around without accomplishing anything. Even from today's perspective, the airlift was a logistical masterpiece. In just under eleven months, 349 aircraft carried a total of 2.34 million tons of goods on 277,264 flights. Food, coal and gasoline were shipped from Frankfurt to Berlin. It is still the largest airlift in history.
