Of all the iron sandstone hills in Hageland, the Wijngaardberg is one of the few that has been preserved relatively intact.

In the 1950s, the plateau, which had been covered with forest and heath until then, was extensively reclaimed for the cultivation of peaches and plums. Natural values with forest and heath were mainly preserved on the sharp northern slopes of the hill. Due to the relatively small-scale character and the limited use of fertilizers, the former orchards still had a high natural value.

On some plots, a number of vineyards have been revived under the impetus of the municipal council and the non-profit organization de Stenen Muur.

The unique thing about the Wijngaardberg is the combination with a diversity of other values. Of course, there is the geological value as a remnant of a petrified sandbank from the Diestian Sea. The structure and layering are still intact over large parts - certainly in comparison with the other hills.
