One of the two corridor trails in Grand Canyon with stunning views into the canyon itself. You just have to go some miles... but not too far, since you have to walk up all the way back. If you are an experienced and ambitious hiker, you can do a multiday hike into the canyon from Bright Angel Trailhead. Moreover this is the end of a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim backpacking adventure. Note that you will need to have a backcountry permit! Permits for the so-called corridor trails are very popular, so make sure you apply four month prior to your trip. You can find more information visiting: nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/backcountry-permit.htm

Bus shuttle will get you to and from the trailhead into Grand Canyon Village with connections to Tusayan and the backcountry office, where you can park you car for a backcountry adventure.

Take enough water with you! We recommend 4 liters per person for a day tour. The temperatures at the starting point can be deceptive because they are much cooler than the inside of the canyon. And keep in mind: everything you walk down has to go up again.

Here begins the Bright Angel Trail, which leads from the rim at Grand Canyon Village down to the Colorado River. Worthwhile stops are Indian Garden and Plateau Point, which are also possible as a day trip.

          This is a great trail!
When walking down here, always keep in mind that going uphill is *much* harder than downhill. So, better return early and don't overestimate yourself.

The most famous and popular way in the canyon. However, you can not do it in one day. But to go at least a little way into the canyon gives you an ingenious insight into the huge landscapes of the Grand Canyon.

The Bright Angel Trail is a hiking trail in the Grand Canyon that leads from Grand Canyon Village
on the South Rim down to the Colorado River.
It is the most frequently used trail into the canyon.
Over its entire length, it gains 1,360 meters in elevation
and reaches the river after 12.9 kilometers. From there, after crossing the river over the Silver Bridge, it continues another 3 kilometers to its end point at Phantom Ranch. It thus cuts through all rock layers of the Grand Canyon and thus geological eras from about 1.2 billion years ago to around 200 million years ago.
The trail is named after Bright Angel Creek, a small, intermittently flowing stream on the north side of the canyon, near Phantom Ranch.

The Bright Angel Trail is the best-developed trail down into the canyon
and is used not only by hikers, but also by mule caravans
with horseback riders or to supply stations in the canyon.
Hikers are required to make way for mules.

Considerable amounts of dust remain in the air for a long time after a caravan.

If you're hiking in winter, bring crampons. I used yaktrax and they really helped where the snow got packed down to ice.

Who wants to go the whole trail should start very early. Otherwise you will not make it in one day. In addition, then not so much going on.

Start and end point for one of the most popular trails in the Grand Canyon. Day trippers can hike to the 1.5 or 3 Mile Resthouse. It's actually too far for a day hike to Indian Gardens, Plateau Point or even Pipe Creek Beach on the Colorado if you're not very well trained.
In addition, the water supply at the resthouses sometimes fails, so you should carry a large amount of water with you. And big means big. I had three liters with me when I set out from Indian Gardens on my last hike and I needed every milliliter.

Before venturing onto the Bright Angel Trailhead, take a deep breath and let yourself be captivated by the stunning scenery of the Grand Canyon. A trail that, although it seems innocent at first, takes you deep into the heart of the canyon. Every step you take down into this gorge reveals the age-old secrets of the earth and the beauty of nature.

The start of this trail is in Grand Canyon Village, and while many dream of walking all the way to the Colorado River, remember: what you go down, you must come back up. And that challenge should not be underestimated. While the walk down seems seductively easy, the walk back up can be very challenging, especially as temperatures rise.

The Bright Angel Trailhead is not an easy walk. It is a testament to the raw, untamed aspects of nature and requires respect and preparation. Mules share this trail with hikers, and their presence reminds us of the traditions and history of this place. If you encounter a mule caravan, please move to the uphill side of the trail and wait quietly for them to pass.

Water is gold here. Although there are aid stations, it is important to always carry plenty of fluids with you - at least 4 liters per person is recommended for a day trip. Remember that while the starting point may be pleasantly cool, the interior of the canyon is considerably warmer.

For those planning a day trip, the 1.5-Mile Resthouse or the 3-Mile Resthouse are suitable destinations. Longer distances require both physical and mental preparation and should not be underestimated.

The beauty of this trail is undeniable. Every view, every turn reveals a new facet of the Grand Canyon. But this trail is also a reminder of our humanity and our limitations. So be careful, plan ahead and enjoy every moment of this unique natural experience. And remember: A trip to the Grand Canyon can be either an exhilarating adventure or a serious challenge – the choice is yours.

Approximately 1400 meters in altitude down to the Colorado. It took us 3 hours to go down and 5 hours to get back up (physically trained quite well)! So think beforehand, prepare well and take enough water and food with you.
