    Tanning mills were used to crush oak, spruce and fir bark in order to obtain the tannic acid required for leather production in the Middle Ages. The first tanning mills worked with stamps that tamped and bumped the bark into small pieces. Another process, also very early, used millstones to crush the bark, which made the product finer. From the end of the 19th century, the old manual tanning mills lost their importance. For this reason, mills of this type with a preserved inventory are rarities in the history of technology today.
    The only one of the former 40 mills in Goslar is unique in Germany with its preserved and operational stamping station. It was extensively restored between 2011 and 2013. Its great feature is its almost completely preserved technical equipment. Even when standing still, it is impressively conveyed how the power was transferred from the water wheel to the individual pieces of equipment exclusively through a large number of gears.
    Regular guided tours with the mill being put into operation are offered on the first Saturday of every month at 3 p.m.
