When Duchess Louise, wife of Friedrich Franz I, died in 1808, it was her express wish not to be buried in Schwerin Cathedral or another representative place, but under one of her beloved old trees next to the Schweizerhaus.

That had to be the case, even if it was against all conventions (at the time). After two torturous years, her widower decided to have a worthy mausoleum built for his deceased wife by the young master builder Barca. And on November 4, 1810, Louise was reburied in her mausoleum, against her will, but quite befittingly. When Friedrich Franz was the last to leave the mausoleum after the solemn ceremony, he is said to have happily called out to his dead wife: "Sü so, Lowising, nu hebben wi di beluert." ("You see, Louise, we've tricked you after all.")

The ducal couple had six children (after two stillbirths). Daughter Louise is buried in Gotha, daughter Charlotte in Rome. Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig lies with his three wives in the Helenen-Paulownen mausoleum. His three brothers (Gustav, Karl, Adolf), who remained unmarried due to lack of money or lack of interest, lie here in the Louisen Mausoleum with their mother.
