Spodek - a sports and entertainment hall, located in Katowice. It was built under the name of the Provincial Sports and Entertainment Hall in Katowice, under which it is known in architectural literature and under which it operated until 1997.
Initially, the facility was to be located on the outskirts of the city, within the Provincial Park of Culture and Recreation. After the presentation of the project, by the decision of the then voivode, through the intercession of Jerzy Ziętek, a new location was designated near the very center, on the site of the former steel mound.
Construction work began in 1964, but was interrupted for 18 months due to suspected structural errors that had not been confirmed. In 1969, the ice hall became the first building in the complex. The entire facility was completed in the spring of 1971, and was officially commissioned on May 8, 1971.
