Fort Sint-Livinus was built in 1634 by the Spanish. It is a simple, square defense structure that was built in the sea wall at the time. Architectural interpretation: The courtyard was enclosed by a more than 10 meter wide moat with a bridge over it. Experts are not yet sure whether the courtyard was surrounded by a wall, but compaction of the soil around the courtyard may indicate this. In the center of the fort was a guardhouse, a kind of watchtower.
These guard posts were part of a chain of defenses.
From the watchtowers the watchman could survey the flooded landscape.
