    10/31/2022 - Shortly after the founding of the city, construction of a Romanesque church began in the north-western part of the old town, which ended in the east with three apses and in the west had two mighty towers. In 1279 the church of St. Mary and St. Rupert was consecrated. The so-called "bride's gate" on the south side of the nave bears witness to the high art of the Romanesque stonemasons next to the west portal.
    In the 14th century the apses were replaced by a Gothic transept and a Gothic chancel. The cathedral, which was the bishop's church from 1469 to 1785 thanks to the efforts of Emperor Friedrich III, underwent several transformations in the interior. In addition to the remains of the Romanesque wall frescoes, the magnificent additions made by Emperor Friedrich III are particularly striking - above all the two imperial galleries, the figures of the apostles and the Man of Sorrows. Friedrich's mark of ownership "AEIOU" can be found in several places in the interior.
    The marble pulpit was erected by Cardinal Melchior Khlesl, whose epitaph is in the choir. His bust is the only work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in Austria.
    The bell-shaped windows of the aisle go back to renovation work in the Baroque period - if you look at the so-called "Mariazell Altar" in the southern aisle, you can see that the side altars received a heavenly zone through the windows.
    Towards the end of the 19th century, the two towers to the west of the church had to be demolished due to dilapidation. They were then rebuilt true to the original.
    Extensive renovation work from 1975 to 1999 gave the Liebfrauenkirche its current radiant appearance.
