The castle has had a turbulent history. The first castle on this site dates from the 10th century, it fell into disrepair, and Count Herman d'Aspremont-Lynden built this Renaissance style castle on its foundations in the 16th century.

In 1792, the French took possession of Aspremont-Lynden and used it as a hospital until 1795. After that, large parts of the palace were demolished, the rest served as a house of worship until 1890, then as a re-education institution for boys until 1904.

Nowadays it is only used sporadically for exhibitions and unfortunately you can only visit it when one is taking place.

The Gatehouse restaurant is located in the gatehouse with typical French cuisine.

The picturesque town of Oud-Rekem was the seat of the imperial county of Rekem (Reckheim) until 1791. Here you can see the Renaissance castle of the Counts d'Aspremont-Lynden, restored in the 1990s, which had served as a psychiatric clinic since the 19th century.

This castle was founded in 1957 in the Mosan Renaissance style on the ruins of a medieval fortress. It served as a count's castle for about 200 years. After that, it was mainly used for social purposes, such as the "insane asylum" (from 1921 to 1980).
In the summer, the castle's interior is open to visitors on certain weekends. A visit is well worth it.
