Planned in 1581 by Eisenerz wheel masters as a simple guard house, the tower was intended to call the miners to work, i.e. to shift. Instead of the simple guardhouse, a stately Renaissance-style tower was built, in which from 1585 tower watchmen provided day and night security guards in the tower room in case of fire or flooding in the valley.
