    Weisstannen village church "John the Baptist"
    Parish church "St. John the Baptist" and "St. Anthony" in Weisstannen
    The first written information that an Anthony chapel exists in Weisstannen dates back to 1485. In the Swiss history encyclopedia, 1485 is also given as the year of construction. According to legend, in order to find the best location for the chapel, some men climbed a rock tower above the front Ringgenberg. From up there they overlooked the valley and agreed on the building site that was safest from danger and easily accessible to everyone.
    It was the place where the church stands today. The rock tower on the Ringgenberg has been called "Gotthus-Chopf" since that day. Three large silver firs were said to have stood on the site of the chapel. That is why the village was called "Weisstannen" and the whole valley "Weisstannental". The mother church of Mels was responsible for the Antonius Chapel in Weisstannen. The Antonius Chapel was dilapidated in 1665 and was replaced by a new building. On June 6, 1666, it was consecrated by Bishop Ulrich of Chur - the Sarganserland belonged to the diocese of Chur at that time. Today, St. John the Baptist is considered the main patron and St. Anthony the Hermit the secondary patron of our church. It can be assumed that the change of patrons probably took place around 1720. There is no written entry. However, a striking number of John the Baptist are entered in the baptismal register from 1720 onwards. In 1828, the church was enlarged under the abbot of Pfäfers and received its current form. Renovations were carried out in 1856, 1874, 1931, 1970 and 2003. Whether you live here as a citizen or spend a day or more here as a guest: you are invited to a personal visit and a contemplative stay in our beautiful church. May the Weisstann church remain a place of prayer, encounter and Christian community for everyone.
