The Penguin Fountain with the six visitors from cold climes is an idyllic and quiet place where you can find peace.

Here in the northeastern part of the Hamburg city park, adjacent to the rose gardens and the plane tree alley, six cheeky penguins frolic on a fountain in the middle of the Blutbuchenrondell - a magical place and popular photo opportunity.
The contrast to the hustle and bustle of the large meadow and wide areas in the park could not be greater: when you enter this densely covered Rondell receives a silence. The circular structure of the Penguin Fountain forms the entrance into the seclusion of the hedgerow and theme gardens in the eastern part of the city park. Four steps lead down to the lowered garden. The play of light and shadow of the leaves of the beech trees here gives the scenery an extra charm on sunny days.

On a small, octagonal well, placed in a larger basin, six penguin figures by August Gaul (1869-1921) are perched around a murmuring fountain. The original bronzes and replicas of penguins have been destroyed and even stolen in recent decades. In the winter months, these Antarctic seabirds get a "roof over their heads" on the spot, so they can safely survive the Hamburg winter.

The design of the city park with works of art goes back to the initiative Alfred Lichtwarks (1852-1914), the director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle and authoritative sponsor of the city park. He demanded that art from the museums be promoted to the public, to create a kind of open-air museum. Today there are 22 sculptures in the city park.
