The Harburg, a jewel on the Romantic Road, is considered one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved castles in Germany and the largest Staufer Palatinate north of the Alps. The castle towers over the city of the same name, Harburg an der Wörnitz. Visitors who take a tour of the castle today not only get a clear picture of this castle as a former prison, but also get to know an extremely well-preserved castle complex with a building fabric that dates back to the High Middle Ages. The Harburg, which was first mentioned in a document in 1150, impresses not only with its size, but also with its well-preserved buildings from the 13th to 18th centuries. In 1299 the Harburg came from the Reich to the House of Oettingen as a pledge, and since this pledge was never redeemed, the castle became the property of the Oettingen family. When the princely line Oettingen - Oettingen died out with the death of Albrecht Ernst II.1731, the Harburg came into the hands of the Oettingen - Wallerstein family. The castle already had five wooden city gates around 1500: The Brucktor (at the bridge), the Egelseetor (leads to the Egelsee), the Nördlinger Tor or Tiefen Tor, the Vesttor (leads to the Veste or Burg) and the Griestor or Donauworth Gate. To prevent unwanted people such as thieves, robbers, beggars and highwaymen from entering the city, the gates were closed every evening. A city wall was largely unnecessary, as the city was almost completely surrounded by house walls. Between 1861 and 1863 all the gates were demolished because they were dilapidated and the maintenance costs for the residents were too high. In the meantime, however, it is known that the residents simply no longer liked the gates. One of the oldest components of the complex, which was expanded and renewed particularly in the construction phases between the 16th and 18th centuries, are the two keep, today called the digestion tower and the thief's tower. The ballroom was built around 1720, the stucco of which was reworked again by a local artist in the middle of the 18th century. However, the character of a well-fortified castle complex remained intact over the centuries. Source: www. Brauchwiki.de
