A wooden church is said to have stood on the site of our parish church as early as 1000. The first massive building was around 1230. Since then, the church has grown into a splendid Gothic structure. Wars and devastating city fires repeatedly destroyed parts of the church and led to the church building being rebuilt in different forms.

Inside the church is a memorial plaque for Johann Schadowitz, the model for the legendary figure Krabat, who found his final resting place in the church.

The patronage "Maria (or Assumption)" of this church refers to one of the many commemorative days or feast days in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. It goes back to the feast of their physical acceptance into heaven, which the Church celebrates annually on August 15th.
In many rural areas it is customary that on this day herbal bundles (called "Kruggweusch" in the Rhenish dialect) are collected by the population and blessed in the festival service.

The church was built as a stately hall church after a fire from 1429 to 1440 and vaulted in 1527. Several additions are more recent: in 1906 a sacristy on the east, a baptistery on the south side (now the confessional chapel) and a west porch were added; the northern vestibule dates from 1933. The southern vestibule with a medieval core was given an upper floor in 1678. A comprehensive restoration took place in 1933/34. The plastered building has stepped buttresses, five-eighths closure, pointed arch windows with simple, renewed tracery and closes with a gabled roof. The western tower, which is square in plan, has been shifted to the north. The substructure probably dates from the 14th century, the high octagonal bell storey from 1846, the mezzanine above and the spire were added in 1867. A sandstone figure of an enthroned Christ with a gesture of blessing from 1710 was attached to the southern vestibule, donated by the sculptor Georg Vater.

The three-nave, four-bay hall has an elevated central nave in the manner of a stepped hall. Octagonal pillars carry the pointed arcades, half pillars are placed on the side aisle walls, a one-bay choir with gallery closes the building to the east. The central nave has a star vault, while the side aisles have reticular vaults. The aisle bays of the western bay have vaulted galleries, the southern one with a probably late Gothic cell vault, the northern one with a groined vault from 1614.
On a pillar of the nave, a commemorative plaque commemorates Johann Schadowitz, the historical model of the legendary Sorbian figure of the magician Krabat, who was buried here in 1704. Johann Schadowitz belonged to the body company of Croats on horseback of Elector Johann Georg II of Saxony. His nationality as a Croatian was popularly corrupted to "Krabat" and contributed to the formation of legends about his person.
