The Elde is the longest river in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, lies in the south and southwest of this country and connects the area around the Müritz with the Elbe. It flows through several large lakes of the Mecklenburg Lake District in its upper reaches. The last of these lakes is the Plauer See, from which the river is regulated. 180 km of the 208 km long Elde from the southern edge of the Müritz to the Elbe at Dömitz are navigable. They form the Müritz-Elde waterway designated as the federal waterway

At the Neuhöfer carp ponds the Lewitzschleuse is located with a hydroelectric power station. One of 17 locks. Of the 22 hydroelectric power plants in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 9 are located on the Elde and on the Elde side canal. Here there is a drop of 50 m and they use the free-flow at the locks. The lock was closed in 2009, renovated and reopened in 2010.
