HISTORY

The first church was built in the neighboring Westerburg during the Christianization of the Lerigau region in the 9th century, but was destroyed before 890. In the 13th century, a newer church dedicated to St. Peter stood there, which existed until the 16th century.
From Westerburg, a chapel was founded in Wardenburg in 1268, dedicated to Our Lady (Mary), from which the core of the present church building derives. The chapel is said to have been larger and more magnificent than the present church and to have five altars. In the late Middle Ages, it was a destination for pilgrimage. A miraculous image of the Virgin Mary depicting the Adoration of the Magi was venerated there. This image was located in the high altar and its whereabouts are unclear after the altar's renovation in 1793.
After the Reformation, St. Mary's Church lost its function as a pilgrimage church, but was elevated to a parish church in the 16th century.
