The Simmelturm was built in the Middle Ages between 1350 and 1400. As the southernmost part of the medieval city fortifications, it served as a prison in quiet times, but also as a guard to the south. It originally had a different, higher roof; the current one was added in 1761.
It got its name from its round shape (“sinwel” means round).
Various coats of arms are attached to the arched frieze, as well as 16 grotesque heads that were intended to serve as a deterrent.

The Simmel Tower derives its name from the Middle High German word "sinwel" (=circular, round) and was built in the second half of the 14th century.
It was built with limestone quarries and faced with sandstone blocks on the inside. Several types of gunfire made it possible to fend off approaching attackers from the tower. The Simmel Tower also served as a prison for a short time. The stone frescoes (so-called "heads of envy" for symbolic defense against damage) and depictions of coats of arms in the upper part of the tower are notable from an art historical perspective.
The Simmel Tower was part of the southeast corner pillars of the city fortifications and served as a defensive structure that connects the south and east axes of the city wall. During the siege, however, it played only a minor role (in contrast to the Pfeiferturm), as the Württembergers and their attack activities were concentrated on the section of the city wall further north at the Weißhofer Tor, and south of the Simmelturm there was an almost impassable swampy area that was completely unsuitable for setting up an attack formation. Like the Pfeiferturm, the Simmelturm still symbolizes the pride, importance and tradition of late medieval "Brettheim".
