The brick building was originally constructed between 1227 and 1239. However, the church was enlarged and remodeled several times in the following centuries. St. Catherine's Church (Kościół św. Katarzyny), Gdańsk's oldest church, stands opposite the Big Mill. It was founded in 1185, but the current brick building dates from the 14th century. In the main altar there is a painting of the Crucifixion with the city panorama of Gdańsk by Anton Möller (1610), in the chancel there is an epitaph by the astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1779). From the tower of the church, in which a large number of clocks are exhibited, a glockenspiel sounds every hour on the hour with Beethoven's famous ode from the ninth symphony "Freude, schöner Götterfunken".
