The name of the Giszowiec district comes from the surname of Georg von Giesche and is a Polish version of the German name Gieschewald (Giesche forest); surname Giesche na Gisz polonized phonetically + formant-member. This name was given to the estate by the mining and metallurgical concern Georg von Giesches Erben (Polish heirs of Giesche). The German name is commemorative (from the name of the former owner of the land) and topographic, because the estate was established on the edge of the forest and was planned according to the urban concept of the city of gardens
Giszowiec consists of multi-family prefabricated buildings and historic houses, mostly single and two-family houses, which used to be a compact mining estate, which is still unique on a European scale and is included in the Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Voivodeship. It was built for miners working in the Giesche mine (later the Wieczorek mine) by Georg von Giesches Erben, commissioned by the company's director Anton Uthemann in 1907–1910. The designers of the estate were Georg and Emil Zillmann. Two-thirds of the mining housing estate was demolished in the 1970s as a result of the development of multi-storey large slab housing for employees of the Staszic mine, established in 1964.
Only thanks to the determination of people, part of the historic part of the original housing estate has survived to this day.
The estate appeared in one of the parts of K. Kutz's Silesian triptych "Beads of one rosary".
