The hut stands on the sunny side just below the top of Mali Stol (2198 m). The first hut was built in 1909 by the Kranj branch of the SPD, and was ceremoniously opened on July 31, 1910. It was named after the greatest Slovenian poet, dr. France Prešeren (1800-1849), a host from Vrba pod Stolom. In 1927, the hut was enlarged, and the opening was on July 15, 1928. After the famous battle of Stol, on February 20, 1942, the partisans burned the hut so that the Germans would not have a base in it. At the initiative of the surviving fighters of the Battle of Stol, PD Javornik-Koroška Bela built a new mountain lodge on the foundations of the old hut and opened it on 21 August 1966. In 1981-1984 the hut was significantly enlarged and renovated, and the grand opening was on 4 August 1984. The hut is open from mid - June to mid - September.

Prešeren's hut stands on an extremely scenic spot. On the east side we see Vrtača, Begunjščica and Košuta; to the southeast, the view stops at the Kamnik Alps, Menina planina, the Posavje hills with Kum and Gorjanci; the whole south side is very varied, when the view walks along the Ljubljana basin and the wide Gorenjska plain, the Notranjska hills to Snežnik, across the Škofja Loka mountain range to Trnovski gozd, Porezno, Ratitovec and Jelovica, we see Kranj, Radovljica and Lake Bled, and with good visibility Ljubljana; there is a beautiful view to the southwest of Julijce with Triglav and Pokljuka and Mežakla in the foreground, if the atmosphere is clean, we can see the Dolomites in the background; we can see the Karavanke ridge, which stretches from Stol to the west with Belščica in the foreground and Kepa in the background; the view to the north obscures the nearby southern slope of Veliki Stol. From the top of Stol there is a wide view to the north of the steep slopes of the Karavanke towards the Drava valley, to the Klagenfurt basin with Klagenfurt, to the east to Obir, Peca and Svinška planina, and to the northwest to Nizke and Visoke Tur.
