      In the area of May-Ayim-Ufer (until a few years ago it was called Gröbenufer), sad stories occurred during the division of Berlin. Several people drowned at this point at the time. Here the Spree was a border river closely guarded by GDR border guards.
      The May-Ayim-Ufer was on the Kreuzberg, i.e. West Berlin side.
      In October 1965, a man tried to swim from the East Berlin bank, where the East Side Gallery is today, to the West Berlin bank in Kreuzberg.
      The GDR border guards discovered him and shot. Before the man had reached the other bank that would save him, he died. Since he had no papers with him, he was initially considered an unknown refugee.

      In 1975 the five-year-old Turkish boy Cetin Mert drowned in this bank area.
      He had played soccer with neighborhood children and the ball fell into the water. While trying to fish out the ball with a stick, the boy fell from the high quay wall into the Spree, the entire width of which was part of East Berlin.
      For this reason, the West Berlin police and fire brigade were not allowed to intervene. The GDR border guards, who were also alerted, did not come to the aid of the drowning boy.
