Since 1527, the picturesque waterway, around 4 kilometers long, has connected the city center of Klagenfurt with Lake Wörthersee. It was built by the estates to provide building materials, wood and stone, for the expansion of the city.
The Lend Canal was once used to supply the city with building and heating material and also fed the city moat, which was around 34 meters wide and 7 meters deep, with water. The Wörthersee fishermen used this route to bring their catch to the Klagenfurt market. The canal ends in Lendhafen. The enclosing walls, stairs and access ramps are made of Pörtschacher marble.
From the Lend Canal you have an atmospheric view of the many villas along the waterway. There is also an idyllic walking and cycling path along the Lend, where inline skaters can also do their laps. And in winter, the old waterway is an ice skating rink to Lake Wörthersee.
