Embedded in the middle of a charming little valley, this 8th century abbey seems timeless. These two imposing towers contrast with the natural setting in which they are located.
But the splendor of this monastery is not surprising when you know that it was one of the most powerful of the Holy Roman Empire.

The impressive Murbach Monastery is located in Grand Ballon at the foot of the Great Belchen in the Vosges. The famous abbey church was founded by St. Pirminus in 727 and was one of the most powerful monasteries of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in the 11th and 12th centuries.
After the 30 - year war, she was rebuilt into an imposing monastery.

The facade is made of pink sandstone and looks very elegant, this is very typical of the region. Inside there are 2 memorial graves. One is dedicated to Count Eberhard, who financed the construction of the monastery. The other was built for 7 monks who died during the invasion of Hungary in the 10th century. At the south portal 2 lions are carved into the stone, one of the two lions sticks out the tongue to the visitors - you should not miss that!
Small tip - walk to the Notre-Dame-de-Lorette Chapel, this is a walk of about 5 minutes. From there you have a beautiful view of the monastery.

In the Murbach valley lies this tiny village of about a hundred inhabitants, which is the only remnant of the very influential Benedictine abbey of Murbach. All that remains of the abbey church are the apse and chancel, both beautiful. The village is very picturesque. A visit not to be missed.

The history of the city is very closely related to that of the monastery. The first monastery was built by Irish monks led by Colomban during the 6th century. In the 8th century the monastery experienced a new boom under Abbot Maur, and was first called Mauri Monasterum, then Marmoutier. A large piece of land is subject to the monastery. It is a time of prosperity and spiritual development with the establishment of the Benedictine order. During the 12th century the church was built, with the west side still standing today. The monastery is ruined in the 14th and 15th centuries by the Geroldseck family, rulers of the city. Some parts of the monastery are destroyed during the peasant uprising of 1525 and the Thirty Years' War. After the Thirty Years' War, Marmoutier was under French rule and experienced a new boom (reconstruction of the choir) until the Revolution, when the buildings were destroyed or sold.
