Even modern Bochum was once a town with a lot of agriculture. A monument to the last cowherd Fritz Kortebusch reminds us of this time. The artistically crafted statue is located near the priory church of St. Peter and Paul, on the site of the old town hall.

In addition to the planetarium and the German Mining Museum, the cowherd monument at Bongardstrasse 29 is Bochum's best-known landmark. Almost every inhabitant of the city knows this "copper guy with a dog and a horn", but only a few know who the city erected a memorial there for.
The statue was erected in 1908 to commemorate the last Bochum cowherd, Heinrich Fritz Kortebusch. On June 24, 1858, the day laborer Kortebusch was hired by the city as a cowherd. As a sign of his dignity, he received a tin horn and a breastplate from the mayor when he took office.

Early in the morning at five o'clock he had to blow the horn, then the citizens would take their cows and goats out into the street, where the shepherd would take them into his care and drive them to the Vöde (pasture) outside the city gates. After Kortebusch had let the animals drink in the evening at today's Stadtparkteich and at Schwanenmarkt, where there used to be a pond, he brought them back to the village around 7 p.m. Kortebusch is said to have been very popular with the entire citizenry because of his quick wit, his loyalty and his zeal for duty.
The last budding took place on July 25, 1870. The rapid development of Bochum from a small farming town to an industrial city made the shepherds superfluous, as hardly any cattle were kept in the city.

Fritz Kortebusch, the last cowherd in Bochum, drove the citizens' cattle to the Vöde, the city's pasture, from 1850 to 1870 and led them to drink at Trankgasse. However, as Bochum developed into an up-and-coming industrial city, the daily cattle drive seemed outdated, and the necessary crossing of the increasingly busy Bongardstrasse was becoming increasingly difficult. The cattle drive was stopped in 1870, and parts of the Vöde were converted into the city park in 1876.

In 1908, people remembered the tranquility of the old farming town with some nostalgia and commissioned the famous Münster sculptor Erich Schmiemann to design a bronze monument for Kortebusch and his sheepdog. It was erected on the market square.

The monument was melted down during World War II. Shortly after the end of the war, Bochum citizens demanded that a reconstruction of the old cowherd monument be erected, and in 1962 a slightly smaller sculpture was re-erected on a simple base - created by the Bochum sculptor Walter Kruse. The monument is located on the old market square, roughly at the spot where the town hall of the rural town of Bochum stood until 1862.
