The road in Meerane is only 248 meters long. But it's tough! A 12% gradient must be overcome to reach the summit. The fact that it goes over cobblestones is an additional challenge. In 1960, the mountain road was finally renamed "An der Steile Wand" (An der Steile Wand) for the 13th International Peace Race. It has long been the landmark of Meerane and a cult for cyclists!

In 1952, the GDR was accepted into the Peace Race organizers by Poland and
Czechoslovakia.
The 8th stage of the now 5th tour led
over 212 km from Leipzig to Karl-Marx-Stadt,
now Chemnitz.

The highlight was the mountain classification on the
Steilwand (Steep Wall) of Meerane.

The Peace Race has been held for 58 years as the largest amateur cycling stage race
in the world.
