The barony of Boelare was one of the five large baronies of the Land of Aalst, and consisted of the actual barony, four parishes where the baron was village lord (Aspelare, Deftinge, Nederhasselt and Schendelbeke) and 6 parishes where the baron held certain seigneurial rights ( Oombergen, Ophasselt, Outer, Parike, Sint-Lievens-Esse and Zandbergen).
The famous, rich and powerful family of barons of Boelare died out in the 13th century, due to a lack of male descendants. Hereditary daughter Aleidis van Boelare, mentioned from 1196 onwards, married three times: the first time with Philip of Harnes, constable of Flanders and viscount of Kassel, then with Gilles of Trazegnies, and finally with Raas van Gavere, lord of Chièvres. The pairship and the barony of Boelare passed to Michel (1205-1229) and Philippe de Harnes gezeid van Boelare, both sons from Aleidis's first marriage.

Philip's daughter Aleyde married Raas van Gavere, lord of Liedekerke, Breda and Aspelare, and brought him to Boelare. The domain subsequently came into the hands of the de Fosseux family when Jean de Fosseux married the heir daughter of Mathilde van Gavere and Nicolaas van Belle.

Their daughter Isabelle of Fosseux married Lodewijk van Reynghersvliet in the 14th century and brought the barony as a dowry. Maria, the last Van Boekhoute, married to Hugo van Lannoy, died in 1563; her daughter Françoise also had a daughter Anna from her marriage to Maximilian van Buren, Count of Egmond. This became the first wife of William the Silent, Prince of Orange-Nassau, as a result of which the latter acquired the barony.

The prince sold the barony in 1602 together with Schendelbeke to Francesco Bernardino de Cassina, from the Duchy of Milan. Maria de Cassina, the last descendant of this family, married Philip, Count of Murat in 1772, and brought with her the glory of Boelare. The Counts of Murat kept her until 1818, the year she was sold.
