The Riekend Rustpunt is a small museum, unique in Flanders, that highlights a totally unknown and little studied aspect of history: manure transport by water from the city to the countryside.
It is located on the Sluis, at a junction of cycling and walking routes.

The Riekend Rustpunt is the smallest museum in the region and highlights the transport of manure by water from the city to the countryside.
Under the title 'From city shit to sandy soil' there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the bear and manure trade from the 17th century to sometime in the 1930s.
The cities had major waste and manure problems and the countryside could use these products to fertilize the agricultural land.
Busy trade between the city and the countryside developed everywhere along the waterways.

The small museum is unique in Flanders because of its contents and is located on the Sluis, at a junction of cycling and walking routes.
You can walk in and out of the building freely every afternoon during the cycling and walking season.

This project is an initiative of the Local and Historical Society Berlare.
Opening hours
October 1 to April 1: only open to groups after reservation
April 1 to October 1: every day from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m
