    Village chapel in Altenstadt

    "The origin and the exact time when the chapel was built is not known. However, the chapel was already noted in the original cadastre of 1816. During the renovation in 1909 it was noted that the farmer Franz Schleich had acquired the chapel in 1862 and in the same year year a new version of the altar was made. In 1866, Mr. Franz Schleich built the tower under the direction of the carpenter Eustach and purchased a bell. This bell is still in the tower today. According to a document dated April 4, 1906, the spouses Josef and Lidwina Ranz left the chapel to the community of Altenstadt. (...) The restoration of the chapel and the furnishings were carried out by the local church painter and restaurant, Paul Ressl. (...)

      The "Große Kapellenrunde" hiking trail, which is very well marked with yellow and white arrows, naturally leads past the Altenstadt village chapel. This circular hike is highly recommended! It begins at the basilica in Altenstadt and leads us up the Schellberg, offering great views of the Alps not only there.
