    The steeple of today's Catholic Church dates from 1476, as a walled-in foundation stone shows. However, the church, which was built early, experienced a hard fate. Only the cross vault and the tower with Gothic windows survived the great fire in Friesenheim in 1638. The lower part of today's tower is therefore preserved in its original structure from 1476, while the nave is a baroque long house. The construction of the nave goes back to the 18th century. The south portal of the church is dated to 1768.
    During the Reformation the church was Protestant from 1566, Catholic again from 1629 in the Counter-Reformation, and it was only from 1772 that the church was used simultaneously by both denominations of the Friesenheim community. With the consent of the Archbishop's Ordinariate, the Catholic Board of Trustees terminated the entire Simultaneum on April 20, 1909.       Saint Laurentius, to whom this church in Friesenheim is consecrated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was archdeacon of the Pope and had been asked by the pagan emperor to hand over the treasure to the church. Laurentius asked for three days, but distributed the church property among the poor inhabitants of Rome and after the agreed time came with the poor to the emperor to present them to him as the treasure of the church. Thereupon he was tortured to death, legend has it that he was alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of St. Lawrence - roasted over coals. He is said to have been of good cheer and told his executioner, on the one hand, whether he would not turn it around.
      The feast day of Saint Lawrence in the saints calendar is August 10th.
