Limburg commemorated the First World War with the exhibition "Limburg 1914 - 1918: Small Stories in a Great War". 44 concrete Stahlhelms that symbolize the German occupation in Limburg. Each helmet represents one Limburg municipality and was artistically crafted by local artists, associations and schools. When brought together, the helmets demonstrate very different and varied perspectives on the theme of war and memory. The 44 helmets are now on the field where the Battle of the Silver Helmets took place in Halen. A place where the helmets form a lasting symbol that commemorates the First World War in Limburg.

During the Battle of the Silver Helmets, German cavalrymen still wore typical German spiked helmets. The spike was intended to ward off blows from swords. The spiked helmets were of little use in
WWI, they were conspicuous in the trenches. That is why the German army replaced them with the Stahlhelm, which is a powerful symbol of the German occupations of the 44 municipalities in Limburg during WWI.
